L33t Speak: Empty Your Pockets

E-mail Print PDF

freedomforceThey have finally done it. When you analyze stores, you come to realize that the items conveniently placed at the check out isle are meant to be impulse buys. Sometimes they work. I mean, who doesn't want a nice candy bar every now and then? But who knew that the best way to stick me with impulse buys would actually be on the internet. I am in no way inclined to look at these products, yet 3 or 4 times in the past week or two alone, I have felt myself compelled to buy a game, or a collection of games.

I-Play: A Console Gamer In PC World...No pun intended.

E-mail Print PDF

As you can tell from the photo accompanying this article, I'm in a bit of a bind.Honey, I'm stuck in the PC

No, I'm not literally stuck in a computer. That sort of thing could only happen to Rick Moranis

On one hand I find myself in a very unique position. I've just turned 20 and for the first time in my life I can see myself getting into PC gaming.

On the other hand, I can't help but shudder at the sheer amount of material available and, I have to admit, I'm not at all equipped with the knowledge - or hardware - I need to give the platform the chance it deserves.

Of course, I've played games on PC.

I loved the LucasArts games as a kid. I'm a huge fan of the Discworld series, so to have been able to play those games when they were easy to work was a joy. Shogun: Total War introduced me to a strategy series that I've always been fascinated by. (But barely dipped into.)

It goes without saying that I sunk days of my life into the Sims and, at one point, I was a happily benign God who let his creature roam the world spreading peace and love and throwing rocks at my enemies in a poor attempt at converting them...

Mass Effect and DLC

E-mail Print PDF

Mass_Eff_LogoBack in 2007, a little game came out from the folks at Bioware called Mass Effect.  It became a huge hit on the Xbox 360 and has spawned a sequel, curiously enough called Mass Effect 2.

With the second game in the trilogy upon us, I went back and revisited Mass Effect along with the two DLC packs, Bring Down the Sky and Pinnacle Station.

Instead of writing separate reviews for the two DLC packs, I will post mini-reviews at the end of this review.

For those of you who have already played the original, enjoy this trip down memory lane.  If you have yet to play the first Mass Effect, read this review, then go buy it moron.

Note:  This will be a SPOILER-FREE review, so read freely.

Ubi's DRM

E-mail Print PDF

Some good and bad news concerning anti-piracy measures hit the news today.  It has been confirmed that developer Ubi Soft will require users to be connected to the internet to play their games.

According to Gamespy, at this time it is only PC games, but unlike the ridiculous EA DRM approach, Ubi will allow gamers to install and reinstall the game unlimited times.  Also noted is that saved game files will be located on Ubi Soft’s gaming servers allowing users to load their save points on any PC.

Of course the downside is that you’ll need to connect to Ubisoft.com every time you play.

I give props to Ubi for implementing this technology, but you never know, this may soon cause a stir amongst gamers.

Editor's Note:  Oh, I'm sure it will cause a stir... I'm already incensed.  :p
